Emerald Ash Borer Education & Sign Installation Volunteer Day

Join the Catskill Center for an educational and hands-on volunteer day focused on the impacts of the invasive emerald ash borer and efforts to protect ash trees in our region!

Date: Friday, October 23, 2026

Time: 10:00 AM- 1:00 PM

Location: Catskills Visitor Center, 5096 NY 28, Mt. Tremper, NY 12457

Difficulty: Moderate to Strenuous

Distance: Approximately ½ mile of walking, with additional walking during volunteer activities

We'll be joined by Johnathan Rosenthal and Radka Wildova, leading scientists from the Ecological Research Institute and Sustaining Ash Partners of the Northeast, who will share their expertise on emerald ash borer and its effects on ash trees. Participants will also take a short walk to see a "lingering ash" tree on the Catskills Visitor Center property and learn about its importance to ash conservation efforts.

Following the educational portion, volunteers will help prepare and install sign pedestals for interpretive signage about emerald ash borer and lingering ash. This hands-on work will involve digging holes, mixing and working with concrete, and moving metal sign bases weighing approximately 30 pounds each.

Please bring water, wear sturdy footwear, and dress in warm, weather-appropriate layers. Morning temperatures may be chilly, but you'll want to be able to adjust your layers as you work.

Please note: This volunteer opportunity involves physically demanding activities, including digging and handling heavy or bulky materials. Participants should be comfortable with these tasks.

The Volunteer Coordinator will send an email the day before the event with updated weather conditions and any additional details.

Registration is required. Please complete all volunteer forms prior to arrival. A limited number of copies will be available on site. All ages are welcome. Participants under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and those under 18 must have permission.

For questions, please contact Sammi Delaney at sdelaney@catskillcenter.org.

Please Note: Pets are not permitted at Catskill Center programs and events with the exception of trained service animals assisting their handlers.
