Tool Cleaning & Invasive Species Prevention Volunteer Day

Join the Catskill Center for a hands-on volunteer event focused on caring for the tools that help us care for our trails and natural areas!

Date: Friday, October 23, 2026

Time: 1:00- 3:00 PM

Location: Catskills Visitor Center, 5096 NY 28, Mt. Tremper, NY 12457

We’ll begin with an introduction to some common invasive species and why cleaning tools is especially important when moving them from one site to another. Volunteers will learn proper tool-cleaning techniques, including how to remove rust and safely clean tools that may have come into contact with poison ivy oils.

After a demonstration, we’ll put those skills into practice by cleaning tools used during Catskill Center stewardship and volunteer projects. By properly maintaining and cleaning our equipment, we can extend the life of our tools while helping prevent invasive plants and pathogens from hitching a ride to new locations.

Please bring water and wear sturdy footwear and clothing appropriate for working outdoors. Bug spray is also recommended.

We will be cleaning tools that have been used in areas with poison ivy. Rubber dish gloves and safety glasses will be provided for volunteers. Tools range in weight from approximately 5 to 15 pounds.

Registration is required. Please complete all volunteer forms prior to arrival. A limited number of copies will be available on site. All ages are welcome. Participants under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and those under 18 must have permission.

For questions, please contact Sammi Delaney at sdelaney@catskillcenter.org.

Please Note: Pets are not permitted at Catskill Center programs and events with the exception of trained service animals assisting their handlers.
