The forests around us are changing. Join us on the Ashokan Rail Trail to learn how to better observe those changes and understand how we can respond through thoughtful, climate-informed stewardship.
Date: Wednesday, April 22, 2026
Time: 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Location: 3045 NY-28, Shokan, NY 12481
As we roll up our sleeves to remove invasive species, we’ll take a closer look at how native tree and plant species are selected based on projected climate conditions and long-term resilience planning. Together, we’ll explore how these decisions support forest health along the Ashokan Rail Trail and help ensure that today’s restoration efforts can thrive in the forests of tomorrow.
You’ll walk away with a deeper understanding of how to recognize climate impacts on the landscape and how informed stewardship choices can help build more resilient forests across the Catskills.
During the program, we’ll walk approximately 1/10 of a mile from the Shokan Station parking lot to our worksite, where we’ll review tool safety, invasive species identification, and best removal practices for our target species.
We’ll be working hands-on in an off-trail area, pulling invasive species such as common buckthorn, multiflora rose, and bittersweet. This work will help prepare the site for the planting of 120 native saplings later this season.
Frequent breaks are encouraged, and water and snacks will be provided. Please dress for work in areas that may include poison ivy, brambles, or ticks.
Please complete all volunteer forms prior to arrival. A limited number of copies will be available on site. All ages are welcome. Participants under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and those under 18 must have permission.
