Join us on the Ashokan Rail Trail as we continue our Learn & Pull Volunteer Series, exploring how invasive species are prioritized for management through the Catskill Regional Invasive Species Partnership (CRISP) tier system.
Date: Friday, May 8, 2026
Time: 1:00 - 5:00 PM
Location: 3045 NY-28, Shokan, NY 12481
When it comes to invasive species, where you focus your efforts matters. As we work side by side removing invasive species, we’ll take a closer look at how species are evaluated based on risk, rate of spread, and ecological impact, and how these classifications guide on-the-ground decisions. Together, we’ll explore how this system helps maximize impact and supports more effective, strategic stewardship across the Catskills.
Join us to learn how your efforts can make a meaningful difference on the landscape.
During the program, we’ll walk approximately 1/10 of a mile from the Shokan Station parking lot to our worksite, where we’ll review tool safety, invasive species identification, and best removal practices for our target species.
We’ll be working hands-on in an off-trail area, pulling invasive species such as common buckthorn, multiflora rose, and bittersweet. This work will help prepare the site for the planting of 120 native saplings later this season.
Frequent breaks are encouraged, and water and snacks will be provided. Please dress for work in areas that may include poison ivy, brambles, or ticks.
Please complete all volunteer forms prior to arrival. A limited number of copies will be available on site. All ages are welcome. Participants under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and those under 18 must have permission.
