Learn and Pull Volunteer Series: Native and Invasive Look-A-Likes

One small misidentification can make a big difference on the landscape. Join us on the Ashokan Rail Trail to learn how to spot invasive plants hiding in plain sight and remove them from our treasured landscape.

Date: Sunday, May 24, 2026

Time: 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Location: 3045 NY-28, Shokan, NY 12481

Some of the most challenging invasive species are the ones that closely resemble native plants. As we take part in hands-on invasive species removal, we’ll take a closer look at commonly confused species found throughout the Catskills and along the Ashokan Rail Trail. Together, we’ll explore key identification tips, visual differences, and field techniques that will help you confidently assess what you’re seeing and respond appropriately.

Join us to sharpen your skills and help protect native landscapes across the Catskills.

During the program, we’ll walk approximately 1/10 of a mile from the Shokan Station parking lot to our worksite, where we’ll review tool safety, invasive species identification, and best removal practices for our target species.

We’ll be working hands-on in an off-trail area, pulling invasive species such as common buckthorn, multiflora rose, and bittersweet. This work will help prepare the site for the planting of 120 native saplings later this season.

Frequent breaks are encouraged, and water and snacks will be provided. Please dress for work in areas that may include poison ivy, brambles, or ticks.

Please complete all volunteer forms prior to arrival. A limited number of copies will be available on site. All ages are welcome. Participants under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and those under 18 must have permission.
