Learn and Pull Volunteer Series: Spongy Moth in the Catskills

You might be surprised to learn how resilient a tree can be, even under severe defoliation. Join us on the Ashokan Rail Trail to take a closer look at spongy moth activity in the Catskills and what it really means for our forests.

Date: Saturday, May 30, 2026

Time: 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Location: 3045 NY-28, Shokan, NY 12481

As we work together to remove invasive species, we’ll explore the cyclical nature of spongy moth outbreaks and address common concerns about their impact on forest health. Together, we’ll clarify misconceptions about long-term damage, highlight the resilience of native oak species, and learn how to distinguish invasive spongy moth caterpillars from native tent caterpillars. You’ll also gain insight into current monitoring efforts and what to look for in the field.

Join us to better understand what you’re seeing in the forest and how these changes fit into the bigger picture of ecosystem health.

During the program, we’ll walk approximately 1/10 of a mile from the Shokan Station parking lot to our worksite, where we’ll review tool safety, invasive species identification, and best removal practices for our target species.

We’ll be working hands-on in an off-trail area, pulling invasive species such as common buckthorn, multiflora rose, and bittersweet. This work will help prepare the site for the planting of 120 native saplings later this season.

Frequent breaks are encouraged, and water and snacks will be provided. Please dress for work in areas that may include poison ivy, brambles, or ticks.

Please complete all volunteer forms prior to arrival. A limited number of copies will be available on site. All ages are welcome. Participants under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and those under 18 must have permission.
